Best Time to Visit the Tower of London | Tower of London Visiting Tips

Everything you need to know before visiting the Tower of London

As one of the oldest tourist attractions, the Tower of London is a World Heritage Site that attracts over 3 million visitors a year. Since the 1500s, the Tower of London has welcomed visitors eager to see the Crown Jewels and royal armories, meet the Beefeaters who serve as tour guides, spot the resident ravens, and learn about its rich history.

What is so interesting about the Tower of London?

The Tower of London was initially built as a strong royal fortress to protect the monarchy and symbolize its power. Over time, it became a symbol of authority and fear, housing prisoners who threatened the Royals or the country. Famous prisoners included Anne Boleyn, Guy Fawkes, Catherine Howard, Sir Walter Raleigh, and even Queen Elizabeth I before she became the Queen.

The Crown Jewels

The Crown Jewels, which have been kept at the Tower of London since 1661, are a world-famous collection of over 23,000 gemstones still used in royal ceremonies today. Guarded and displayed in the Jewel House, the Crown Jewels play a key role in events like the Coronation and the State Opening of Parliament when the Imperial State Crown is worn.

The Ravens

Legend says that the ravens at the Tower of London protect the kingdom, and if they ever leave, the Tower and the kingdom will fall. To prevent this, at least six ravens are always kept at the Tower and looked after by a special Ravenmaster. Currently, there are seven ravens: Harris, Poppy, Georgie, Edgar, Jubilee, Branwen, and Rex. These intelligent birds each have their own unique personalities and occupy four territories within the Tower’s walls.

Royal Armouries

The Tower of London houses an impressive collection of historic arms and armor. Some of the most important weapons and military objects in the Royal Armouries collection are displayed within the White Tower, at the heart of the Tower of London.
